History of our Local
SMART 137 was organized with a charter in 1924 as the Amalgamated Sheet Metal Workers’ International Alliance but the local existed as far back as 1911. Originally our members’ crafted automobile body parts soon shifted to helping fabricate the neon signs that illuminated Broadway. Since then, we’ve proudly contributed to iconic New York landmarks like Yankee Stadium, the Apollo Theatre, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, and the JFK Airport.
